The Role of Reviews in Shopify Conversion Rate
Tom Williams

Reviews are the single most impactful trust signal in ecommerce. Here's how to collect more reviews, display them effectively, and use them to systematically lift your Shopify conversion rate.
According to Spiegel Research Centre, displaying reviews can increase conversion rates by up to 270% for higher-priced products. For lower-priced products, the uplift is smaller but still significant. Reviews are not a nice-to-have feature on your Shopify store — they are one of the highest-leverage conversion tools available.
The Review Conversion Effect
The conversion impact of reviews is not linear. Going from zero reviews to five reviews produces a dramatic uplift. Going from five to twenty-five produces another meaningful gain. Beyond a hundred reviews, the marginal impact per review decreases — but the volume itself becomes a trust signal in its own right.
How to Get More Reviews
- 1Automate review requests: send an email 14-21 days after confirmed delivery
- 2Keep the review process short — a 1-click star rating with an optional comment converts far better than a long form
- 3Offer a small incentive (discount on next order, points) for leaving a verified review
- 4Follow up once with non-responders, 7 days after the initial request
- 5Ask for a photo alongside the review — UGC dramatically increases the value of each review
Review Display Best Practices
- Show star rating and review count directly beneath the product title — above the fold
- Feature 2-3 highlighted reviews (most helpful or highest rated) near the top of the reviews section
- Allow filtering by star rating, keyword, and verified purchase
- Display review photos in a browsable gallery format
- Show a review summary widget listing the most commonly mentioned attributes
- Respond publicly to every review, especially negative ones
Choosing a Review Platform
Shopify's native product reviews are basic and lack features. For a more capable platform, Okendo, Stamped.io, and Judge.me are the most widely used. Yotpo is a strong option for larger stores that want to combine reviews with loyalty and referral programmes. All of them integrate with Klaviyo for automated review request flows.
“The brands with the most reviews are not usually the ones with the best products — they are the ones that systematically ask for them. Make review collection a process, not an afterthought.”
