Exit Intent Strategies for Shopify Stores

Exit intent technology detects when visitors are about to leave your Shopify store. Here's how to use it intelligently to recover potential sales without annoying customers.
Exit intent technology detects the micro-movements that indicate a user is about to leave your page — typically the mouse moving towards the browser's back button or close button — and triggers an action in response. On mobile, it fires when a user makes a rapid upward scroll. Used thoughtfully, it is one of the most effective last-chance conversion tools available.
When to Use Exit Intent
Exit intent is most valuable on pages where visitors are showing buying intent but not converting: product pages, collection pages, and the cart. It is less relevant on informational pages like blog posts, where a visitor leaving is completely normal behaviour.
Effective Exit Intent Offers
- First-order discount: '10% off your first order — use code WELCOME10'
- Free shipping offer: 'Wait! Get free shipping on your first order today only'
- Email capture: 'Get early access to new arrivals and exclusive deals'
- Social proof reinforcement: Show a compelling recent review for the product they were viewing
- Price match reassurance: 'Not sure? We match any UK price — just ask'
- Back-in-stock alert: If browsing an out-of-stock product, offer to notify when it returns
Rules to Prevent Annoyance
Exit intent popups have a bad reputation because they are often implemented poorly. These rules keep them effective without damaging the experience:
- 1Show the popup a maximum of once per session — do not re-trigger it after dismissal
- 2Never show it to users who have already subscribed or who have an active discount
- 3Suppress it on the checkout page entirely — never interrupt someone mid-purchase
- 4Make it trivially easy to dismiss — a clear 'X' or 'No thanks' option is essential
- 5Test different offers by segment — first-time visitors and returning visitors should see different messages
Recommended Apps
Privy, Klaviyo (for email capture), OptiMonk, and Justuno all offer Shopify-native exit intent functionality with solid segmentation options. For most Shopify stores, Privy or Klaviyo is sufficient — adding a dedicated exit intent tool is usually only warranted at higher traffic volumes.
“Exit intent is a second chance, not a last resort. The best exit intent experiences make customers glad they did not leave.”
