Product Bundling Strategies for Higher AOV on Shopify

Product bundles increase average order value and make purchasing decisions easier for customers. Here's how to create and promote effective product bundles on Shopify.

Product bundling is one of the oldest tactics in retail, and one of the most effective. A well-constructed bundle makes the purchasing decision easier for the customer (fewer choices to make) and more valuable for you (higher revenue per transaction). On Shopify, bundles can be implemented in several ways, from simple discounted sets to build-your-own bundle configurators.

Types of Bundles That Work

  • Curated bundles: pre-selected complementary products sold together at a discount (a starter kit, a gift set)
  • Volume bundles: buy more of the same product at a better unit price (3 for the price of 2)
  • Mix-and-match bundles: customer selects their own combination from a defined set (choose any 3 candles for £30)
  • Build-your-own bundles: customer configures a product with accessories and add-ons
  • Cross-category bundles: combine products from different categories that solve a problem together

Pricing Your Bundles

Bundle pricing needs to meet two criteria: the customer needs to perceive value, and you need to maintain an acceptable margin. Show the individual item prices next to the bundle price, with the saving calculated. A 10-15% discount on bundles is typically sufficient to trigger the purchase without significantly eroding margin.

Implementing Bundles on Shopify

  1. 1For simple fixed bundles: create a new product with a variant for each bundle configuration
  2. 2For dynamic bundles: use Shopify's native Bundles app (introduced in 2023) for inventory-tracked bundles
  3. 3For complex configurators: apps like Bundler, Fast Bundle, or Infinite Options offer more flexibility
  4. 4Feature bundles prominently on product pages as a 'Complete the set' option
  5. 5Add bundles to your homepage as gift ideas or value offers during key periods
Key insightBundles work particularly well as gift options. 'Ready-to-gift' language ('beautifully packaged, arrives gift-ready') combined with a bundle discount targets the gift-buying segment — a group that is notoriously less price-sensitive.

Measuring Bundle Performance

Track bundle take-up rate (what percentage of customers who view the bundle page purchase it), the incremental AOV lift on bundle orders vs individual product orders, and the margin impact. A bundle that drives AOV up by £15 but reduces margin by 8 percentage points may or may not be net positive — the calculation depends on your specific cost structure.

The best bundles sell themselves because the combination makes obvious sense. If you have to explain why the bundle is valuable, the bundling logic probably needs rethinking.
