How to set up and grow a subscription box business on Shopify, from product selection and fulfilment to reducing churn and increasing LTV.

Subscription boxes represent one of the most attractive business models in ecommerce: predictable monthly revenue, forecastable inventory, and a committed customer base. The challenge is the operational complexity and the constant battle against churn.

The Subscription App Landscape

Shopify does not have native subscription functionality built in. You'll need a third-party app. Recharge is the market leader, with deep Shopify integration and a large feature set. Bold Subscriptions and Skio are strong alternatives. Choose based on your order volume, customisation needs, and budget.

Designing Your Subscription Offer

  • Offer a clear discount incentive for subscribing (10–20% is typical)
  • Give subscribers skip and pause options — they reduce cancellations
  • Consider a curated vs. customisable box model
  • Define your curation frequency: monthly is most common, but quarterly works for higher-priced boxes

Fulfilment Considerations

Subscription fulfilment requires precise timing. All boxes ship on the same day, which creates a fulfilment spike your logistics partner needs to plan for. If you're using a 3PL, negotiate subscription-specific terms. If you're fulfilling in-house, map out the process before your first billing cycle.

Key insightThe most common reason subscribers cancel is not dissatisfaction with the product — it's that they forgot they subscribed or feel they have no control over it. Proactive communication and flexible options fix both.

Reducing Churn

Average subscription box churn in ecommerce is 6–8% per month. Reducing it by even 1–2% has a dramatic impact on LTV. Key levers: send a preview email before dispatch to build anticipation, offer a pause option before cancellation, and create a subscriber-only community or content hub that adds value beyond the box.

Tracking Subscription Health

Monitor MRR, churn rate, average subscriber tenure, and subscriber acquisition cost. These are the four metrics that tell you whether your subscription business is structurally healthy or growing on a leaky foundation.
